Coil vs. Rotary Tattoo Machines – The Ultimate Comparison

    Choosing the right tattoo machine is one of the most important decisions a tattoo artist has to make – regardless of whether they are just starting out or planning to switch to new equipment after their current machine wears out. If you are facing such a choice, you are probably considering buying either a coil or a rotary machine. These are two basic types of machines, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Do not base your choice solely on price; also consider working comfort, functionality, and preferred tattooing style.     Coil tattoo machines

    Let's give them priority, as coil machines are classics among tattooing equipment. Despite their somewhat outdated design, they are still quite popular, especially among tattoo artists who learned to work with coil machines and see no need to switch to a rotary machine.

    Coil tattoo machines operate based on electromagnets that set the needle in motion. During operation, they produce a characteristic sound and generate distinctly noticeable vibrations, which for many tattoo artists are an inseparable part of the tattooing process.

    The advantages of coil tattoo machines mainly include:

    • Relatively low price – basic models of coil machines can be purchased for around PLN 200, an example of which is the Leaf brand machine available at Ars Tattoo.
    • Freedom to make modifications – there is no problem with replacing coils or other components of the machine's construction, thanks to which one device can serve a tattoo artist for years (high availability of spare parts).
    • Very suitable for working with standard tattoo needles.

    Disadvantages? There are also plenty of those, just to name a few:

    • Very loud operation and distinct vibrations, which diminishes the comfort of the tattoo artist and the client.
    • The need to set and frequently change settings and adjust the machine, which can be challenging for beginner tattoo artists.
    • Coil machines are not compatible with convenient cartridges.
    • Considerable weight, less ergonomic shape.

    It is certainly a good machine for a beginner tattoo artist who can learn the basics of technique (especially classic, using standard needles) and develop their own style on it. Transitioning from a coil machine to a rotary machine is much easier than the other way around. And let's not forget about the very attractive price.

    Rotary Tattoo Machines

    Rotary tattoo machines represent a significant technological leap compared to coil machines. These are simply much more modern devices that use an electric motor instead of coils. They are very easy to use and versatile – they can be used at every stage of the tattooing process (lining, shading, filling).

    It's worth noting that rotary machines are a very broad group of devices, which also includes the popular pen-type machines (with an exceptionally ergonomic shape, super comfortable) and wireless machines (ideal for mobile tattoo artists and for working on designs in hard-to-reach body areas).

    The advantages of rotary machines simultaneously address the disadvantages of coil machines:

    They are much quieter and generate minimal vibrations, which translates into excellent working comfort. They are very easy to operate – they do not require time-consuming adjustments and configurations. They are versatile – one machine will serve you for lining, shading, and filling. They are compatible with both classic needles and cartridges. They are lighter and better balanced than coil machines (especially pen-type models).

    On the downside, rotary machines have:

    Higher price – here prices start at around PLN 580, such as for the Sirius Ultime Color Packer machine. Less ability to interfere with the machine's construction, which often means that in case of a malfunction, a new device must be purchased.

    Despite these drawbacks, it must be honestly admitted that rotary machines are in many ways a better choice than coil machines. It is no coincidence that they are now the foundation of every professional tattoo artist's equipment. However, it is not worth dismissing coil machines outright, as they can be a really good option for beginners and an excellent learning tool.
