How to open a tattoo studio? Step-by-step guide

According to various estimates, there are approximately 3000-3500 professional tattoo studios operating in Poland. In turn, the number of unregistered tattoo artists, working from home and among friends, can be counted in thousands. If you are linking your professional future with the art of tattooing, we definitely recommend opening a studio and creating your own brand that will inspire trust and allow you to carry out ambitious, truly profitable projects. We also understand that you have concerns about bureaucracy and hundreds of matters to deal with, but the initial effort can pay off. Read our article, where we advise you on how to open a tattoo studio step by step. Business Registration To legally run a tattoo studio, you must establish a business (we omit the option of unregistered activity – it is too heavily limited by revenue limits). Consider operating as a sole proprietorship or a company. Also choose the method of taxation – based on general principles, flat tax, or lump sum. It is best to discuss all this with a tax advisor who has experience in establishing and operating businesses. Ars Tattoo Expert Advice: There is no separate PKD code for a tattoo studio. Therefore, choose code 96.09.Z (Other service activities, not elsewhere classified), which covers the services of tattoo artists and piercers. Find a suitable location for the studio A tattoo studio does not have to be very large, especially if you are aiming for a boutique business and intend to tattoo clients personally, eventually hiring additional tattoo artists in the future. It is important, however, that the studio is located in an attractive area for clients – pay attention to the availability of public transport stops and the possibility of separate parking spaces. When looking for a premises, do not be guided solely by the rent. Also, make sure that it meets sanitary criteria regarding, among other things, the storage of tools, the availability of social facilities, a bathroom, etc. The studio should be large enough to be able to separate a waiting room for clients. BDO BDO, or the Product Database, is a term that every future tattoo studio owner should become familiar with. When running such a business, you must register with BDO, as your studio will be a source of many diverse types of waste. This waste must be recorded – it is cumbersome, but unfortunately necessary. You submit the application for entry into the BDO at least one month before the planned start of operations. Gather the necessary equipment for the tattoo studio This is a crucial stage. Tattoo studio equipment determines the comfort of your work, the range of services provided, and how clients perceive the studio. You can be sure that many will give up on getting a tattoo if they judge that you are using low-quality equipment. Take care of the salon's brand image! Everything you need to equip your tattoo studio, from basic accessories, through machines and lighting, to professional furniture, including tattoo chairs and swivel stools, can be bought at Ars Tattoo. Doing it online will save you a lot of time and allow you to calmly compare different products in terms of functionality, quality of workmanship, and of course, price. You can also take advantage of completely non-binding and free advice from Ars Tattoo experts – just contact us and we will help you equip your new tattoo studio. Summary In this article, we omitted such obvious issues as renovating the premises to adapt it for a tattoo studio, marketing, insurance, or preparing sample contracts and declarations for clients. There is much more to it, so if you are considering opening your own studio, prepare well for it and give yourself at least a few months to launch the business. You can also start with a smaller scale of operations and instead of a studio, receive clients at home or provide mobile tattooing services, for which there is a huge demand today. Consider various options, calculate the budget, and remember that ultimately, the greatest impact on success in this industry is the quality of work, so do not skimp on equipment and regularly practice and create your own designs. Frequently Asked Questions and Answers How much does it cost to equip a tattoo studio? The cost of equipping a studio naturally depends on its size, the number of stations, and the quality of the chosen elements. Conservatively, you can assume that you need a minimum of around PLN 50,000 to start tattooing in comfortable, professional conditions. What PKD code for a tattoo studio? There is no separate PKD code dedicated to tattoo studios. When establishing such a business, indicate code 96.09.Z, i.e., Other service activities, not elsewhere classified. Is it worth opening a tattoo studio? Yes, a tattoo studio is a profitable business, provided, of course, that you are able to offer clients high-quality tattooing. It is estimated that one in ten people in Poland already has at least one tattoo, and even every third tattoo owner is considering getting another one. What is needed in a tattoo studio? A professional tattoo studio requires full equipment with specialized accessories, tools, and furniture. The long shopping list must include, among other things, tattoo machines, needles, cartridges, stencil transfer equipment, chairs and swivel stools, and lighting. Is a tattoo studio subject to BDO? Yes, the owner of a tattoo studio must submit an application to the BDO at least one month before starting operations.

Is it really the ideal tattoo machine? We take a look at PEN-type machines

On our blog, you'll find several articles dedicated to various tattoo machines – one of them is a direct comparison of coil and rotary machines. At Ars Tattoo, however, we see rapidly growing interest in PEN-type machines, which many of our clients are starting to consider ideal tattoo devices. Where does this opinion come from? What is so special about these machines? In what projects do they work best? We explain all of this in our article. Be sure to check it out if you're considering purchasing a new machine. What are PEN-type machines? These tattoo devices would be difficult to confuse with other popular machines, especially coil ones. Their name refers to their pen-like appearance, although it's more like a marker. Either way, the PEN-type machine has a fundamental advantage over other devices: it fits perfectly in the hand, allowing for a natural finger position (as if writing). Both tattoo artists at the early stages of learning to tattoo and experienced artists looking to replace their worn-out equipment with something newer will appreciate this. From a technical point of view, every PEN-type machine is simply a rotary machine, with a longitudinally placed electric motor connected to a stabilizing mechanism that drives the needle. So, if you enjoy working with a rotary machine, believe me, switching to a PEN-type model will be completely painless, and even super comfortable. Why are these tattoo devices so popular? Anyone who "switches" to a PEN-type machine from a coil model or even a standard rotary machine will immediately appreciate the comfort of working with this equipment. PENs fit perfectly in the hand, allow for longer sessions and shorter breaks (they don't tire the hand as much), and because they work with cartridges, they allow for quick startup and cartridge changes at any time, almost unnoticed by the client. An important advantage of PEN-type machines (which can also be a disadvantage, which we'll get to in a moment) is their enclosed housing. This protects the motor and control electronics from ink spills, as well as from other external factors, which should translate into longer device durability. Purpose of PEN-type tattoo machines If you are looking for a universal tattoo machine, we can confidently recommend PEN-type models. These machines are suitable for virtually any project and at every stage, from outlining, through shading, to filling. The secure grip of the machine allows for stable handling, making it an excellent choice for detailed projects requiring maximum precision. Do PEN-type machines have any significant drawbacks? The main disadvantage of such machines can be considered potential repair problems. The enclosed, compact design makes it difficult to diagnose faults and to maintain the device independently. This can also foreshadow higher maintenance costs for the machine – especially if repair proves uneconomical. Let's also mention the relatively high price of the machine, especially compared to traditional rotary models, not to mention coil machines. A wide selection of branded PEN-type tattoo machines can, of course, be found in Ars Tattoo's regular offer. We recommend machines from renowned manufacturers, including AI-TENITAS, ZENITH, GLADIUS, AMBITION, BISHOP, CHEYENNE, and DRAGONHAWK. Frequently Asked Questions and Answers What types of tattoo devices are there? Tattoo devices, or machines, can be divided into two basic categories: coil machines and the more modern and now much more popular rotary machines. This second group also includes PEN-type machines and wireless machines. What is a PEN-type tattoo machine? It is a very popular type of tattoo machine today, whose construction resembles a thick pen or marker. It has a longitudinally placed electric motor connected to a stabilizing mechanism that drives the needle. It is super comfortable, ideal for long tattooing sessions. Is a PEN machine a rotary machine? Yes, PEN-type machines are classified as rotary machines, also known as tattoo rotary machines. What are universal tattoo machines? The criterion of machine universality is best met by PEN-type tattoo devices, which can be used for all tattooing techniques, from outlining, through shading, to filling. Such a machine will work well for both small, symbolic projects and large tattoos covering a significant body area.

Tattooing: What equipment do you need?

We continue our series of articles aimed at beginner tattoo artists. If you have already managed to read our tattoo artist's guide, where we advise on how to take your first steps in this profession, it's time to get down to specifics and start assembling the necessary tools for tattooing. This time, we won't be focusing on elements strictly for learning to tattoo, but rather on what you really need to realize your first project on a live model. Let's get started. Accessories for transferring the design Precisely transferring the design onto the client's skin is the foundation of a successful tattoo. You'll need appropriate accessories and equipment, from tattoo stencil paper and hectographic ink to a printer. All of these are, of course, available in Ars Tattoo's permanent offer. If you want to create your own portfolio of designs, use a rapidograph to design them. What is a rapidograph? You can find out more about that in another blog article. Tattoo machine – time to choose it consciously Beginner tattoo artists often experiment with different types of machines, which is highly recommended. During the learning phase, it's worth testing both classic coil machines and more advanced rotary machines. If you've already done that and know which machine works best for you, then buy a model tailored to your expectations, one that will guarantee an accurate reproduction of the design on the model's skin. A wide selection of branded tattoo machines, including super comfortable wireless machines, can, of course, be found in Ars Tattoo's permanent offer. Ars Tattoo Expert Tip: You can also try your hand at the handpoke technique, for which you don't need a machine. You can read more about it in a separate article on our blog. Needles/cartridges Introducing ink under the skin requires either classic needles or cartridges. The former are dedicated to coil machines and are more often chosen by so-called old-school tattoo artists. If you prefer working with a rotary machine, you will certainly opt for cartridges – much more convenient and much easier to quickly change during a project. Both needles and cartridges can be found in Ars Tattoo's permanent offer. Grip This is a small but very useful accessory for tattooing. Simply put, a grip helps guide the needle more easily. This directly translates to greater comfort and precision during work. At Ars Tattoo, we offer many variants of grips for cartridges and standard needles, including disposable, rubber, silicone models, and those with adapters to fit the grip to a specific machine. Inks Tattoo inks are, of course, an essential attribute of a tattoo artist. Available in an enormous variety of colors, they determine not only the aesthetics but also the durability of the tattoo. Remember to use only REACH-compliant inks for tattooing people, which guarantees safety and the absence of undesirable skin reactions. Anesthesia It may not be essential, but it's worth having on hand if your model turns out to have a low pain threshold. Tattoo anesthetics, of course, do not guarantee complete elimination of unpleasant sensations, but they significantly increase the comfort of the person being tattooed (and thus the tattoo artist, who no longer has to "fight" with a constantly squirming client). You can read more about how tattoo anesthetic works in a separate article on our blog. Petroleum jelly Modest petroleum jelly is also an important part of a tattoo kit. You'll use it to improve needle/cartridge glide, which translates to better working comfort. Additionally, tattoo petroleum jelly provides extra moisture and skin protection. We write more about which petroleum jelly to choose in another article on the blog. Hygiene, care, protection Tattooing is not just the – let's call it – artistic and technical part, but also the entire setup that determines the comfort and safety of the client. You need to stock up on a range of products to maintain hygiene at the workstation, as well as to protect the fresh tattoo and care for it during the initial, critical stage. Assemble a kit consisting of professional hygiene and disinfection products, tattoo cosmetics, and special dressings – Ars Tattoo consistently recommends the best solution of this type, which is second skin. These are, of course, only the most important items you need for tattooing. Let's not forget about small accessories, such as disposable gloves, cups, or the entire tattoo studio equipment. Frequently asked questions and answers What do you need to do a tattoo? The basic elements are a tattoo machine, needles or cartridges, and ink. In addition to this, there are smaller, though no less important, accessories, such as a machine grip, hygiene products, and cosmetics that improve the comfort of the client and the tattoo artist (tattoo petroleum jelly, optionally anesthetic, skin and workstation disinfectant, fresh tattoo dressing). What types of tattoo machines are there? The two basic groups are classic coil machines and much more modern rotary machines. The latter are further divided into several variants, including pen-type and wireless machines. Can you get a tattoo without a machine? Yes, a tattoo can be done using the handpoke technique, meaning with just needles. This is a traditional form of tattooing that is currently experiencing a renaissance of interest, guaranteeing a unique effect (but also requiring excellent skills from the tattoo artist).
